Astonishing beauty: purple manuscript from Charlemagne’s age
Legend says this manuscript, written on dyed parchment, was donated by Charles the Bald to the abbey of St Denis. It was made some decades earlier in northern France by scribes and illuminators influenced by the court school of Charlemagne. It’s an astonishing example of the very creative book production in these times. And even more astonishing is the state in which it has been preserved.
